A Dog Who’s More Than 10% Happier

Television journalist Dan Harris recently released a book called 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Really Works — a True Story.

From what I understand, it chronicles his journey to meditation as a way to calm the incessant chatter in his mind. Doing so led to what he estimated is a 10% increase in his overall happiness.

It really does sound like a great read, and I’ll probably download a copy once I work through my stack of five books ready and waiting.

But as I watched this ridiculously adorable video, I can’t help but see this little guy looks much more than 10% happier.

Wonder how much happier any of us would be by living in the present moment instead of thinking about a different one?

    Was it calming the chatter in his head–if he’s trying to measure happiness??

    • Hi Robin – I haven’t read the book yet, but from what I can tell in his interviews, yes, by becoming aware of the internal chatter, and keeping himself from getting emotionally caught up in it, he’s determined he’s “that” much happier. He sounds like a very practical guy, so it’s probably a really good read. Thanks for stopping by!

    ‘Ridiculously adorable’ was definitely the way to describe that video. I’ve always admired the way that dogs and animals in general are so much more easily satisfied than us humans, and I’m glade to see that you’ve made a similar observation. I suppose it’s due to our mental and emotional complexities that makes it difficult for us to be happy. Without such baggage, dogs are able to experience a sort of ‘primitive’ happiness from the smallest of things; very inspiring indeed =)

    • Hi Keith! Would you believe there’s actually an online class called The Science of Happiness through UC Berkeley that teaches a scientific approach to being happier? I have mixed feelings about it. It kind of takes the fun out of being happy, but for people chronically unhappy, it’s probably a beacon of hope. Happiness seems to uncomplicated to most dogs. Anyway, thanks for stopping by!
